Star Davis and Pat Hand will headline the Let There Be Light event at 7:00 pm, Tuesday, January 26, at Smith Theatre on the campus of Howard Community College. Both Star and Pat will speak on their fascinating professions, careers, projects and their respective work for the Inner Arbor Trust on Merriweather Park at Symphony Woods, and the Chrysalis.

Star Davis, Lighting Designer, ARUP, New York

Star Davis, Associate IALD, is an award-winning Lighting Designer in the New York City studio of the global firm Arup. Star received recognition by her industry peers for her work on the Fulton Center transportation hub in lower Manhattan, and her current projects include the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Expansion (designed by Snohetta), and the Lowline, the subterranean counterpart to New York’s High Line linear park. Star is also the lead lighting designer for Merriweather Park and its first structure, the Chrysalis, which is a stage, pavilion and sculpture (designed by artist/architect Marc Fornes of THEVERYMANY). The art of Star’s lighting is grounded in the analytical understanding of human perception, optics, material, and atmospheric phenomena. With a Master of Fine Arts in Architectural Lighting from Parsons, and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Duke University, Star is also an adjunct professor of graduate students in lighting and daylighting at Parsons, The New School for Design, which is ranked as one of the top five design schools in the world.

Pat Hand, General Manager, Production Resource Group (PRG), Washington, DC

Pat Hand is the General Manager of the Washington office (located in Howard County) of the global production resource group, PRG. Pat is a recognized expert in the production management and entertainment industries, with decades of expertise in concert lighting, audio, video, production design and logistics. Pat has directed the production design, technical creation and stage management for events with Fortune 500 companies and the United States Government alike, including numerous White House and Inaugural events, the FDR Memorial Dedication, the Korean War Memorial Dedication, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Dedication, and the Coca Cola 125th Anniversary, among many others. Pat is an accomplished musician, writer and producer and he has albums, singles and musical development deals to his credit on CBS, A&M and ABC Records. As a resident of Howard County, Pat is leading PRG’s production lighting specification for Merriweather Park’s Chrysalis, in coordination with Star Davis and her Arup colleagues.

Let There Be Light is the third in a series of professional presentation events the Inner Arbor Trust has sponsored to introduce its Merriweather Park at Symphony Woods to showcase the world class talent contributing to the, “new kind of cultural park, where the landscape becomes the setting for arts, cultural, and civic uses,” as per the Howard County Plan for Downtown Columbia. The Inner Arbor Trust is an independent 501(c)(3) charitable organization created by the Columbia Association to fulfill the 2010 Howard County General Plan.
